The holiday season is often associated with joy, celebration, and togetherness. However, it can also be a time of increased stress and emotional challenges for many individuals.

One common source of stress during the holidays is the pressure to meet expectations and create a picture-perfect experience. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy or failure if things don't go as planned. Additionally, for those who have experienced loss or are grieving, the holidays can intensify feelings of sadness and loneliness.

If you feel that the holidays aren't always merry and bright and perhaps even bring about a sense of dread, you aren't alone. Thankfully there are some strategies you can use to help navigate through through this time.

  1. Acknowledge and validate emotions that arise. The holidays can be really difficult for many people as they often make us think of loss - relationships that may have changed, or the passing of those we love and care about. Grief around the holidays isn't limited to people we may miss; we may be reminded of pets that are no longer with us or traditions that we no longer partake in. Remember that it's ok and completely normal to feel emotions other than joy and happiness. Make room for these emotions. They will feel less overwhelming if you allow them to be there.

  2. Set realistic expectations and plan ahead. This may mean setting boundaries and saying 'no' to additional requests or invitites. Knowing your triggers around the holidays can help you to be prepared. If you're anticipating a particularly challenging situation or event, give your self extra space surrounding that event to process emotions that come up.

  3. Take proactive steps to prioritize self-care during this time. This may involve practicing self-compassion, seeking support from loved ones or professionals, and finding healthy coping mechanisms.

By recognizing the potential challenges that arise during the holiday season and taking steps to address them, you can better manage their mental health and navigate this time with greater resilience and well-being.
